Paraphrasing, Summarizing, and Quoting
Paraphrasing
1) You restate the source's ideas in your own words.
2) It gives reader same level of detail provided in the original sources.
3) It will generally be about the same length as the original source material.
Summarizing
1) You provide your readers with a condensed version of an author's key points
2) You should decide what your reader needs to know
3) You should add details sparingly, going only into the depth that is necessary
Quoting
1) Directly from a text allows you to introduce your reader to the way those ideas are expressed
2) When you risk losing the essence of the author's ideas in the translation from her words to your own.
3) You should make sure to use the correct citation style
